10 November 17 - What is a Bouncologist?

BOUNCOLOGIST

What or who is a Bouncologist? Well here are Rock It HQ we are experts when it comes to Bouncy Castles and all things inflatable – well nearly all! We believe a person who is an expert in the Bouncy Castle industry and instinctively knows a good bouncy castle when they see one is a Bouncologist and it goes without saying that they work in the Funology Department.

The FUNOLOGY Department within Rock It Inflatables is a top secret area in the company that Bouncologist spends hours and hours testing (not playing), and bouncing on inflatables and creating the very best party packages for their fabulous clients that will guarantee children's laughter, smiles and happiness.

Well all the above explains a very modern and light hearted version of where the bouncy castle and inflatable industry is today however, where did it all start?

The first inflatable structure was designed in 1959 by John Scurlock in Louisiana USA. He was experimenting with inflatable covers for tennis courts and noticed his employees loved jumping on the covers and having fun. Scurlock was the inventor of inflatable domes, inflatable tents, inflatable signs and his greatest achievement was the invention of the air safety cushion used by fire and rescue departments to catch people jumping out of buildings or from heights.

Scurlock then set up the first Space Walk manufacturing company in New Orleans and in 1968 his wife set up the first inflatable rental company hiring Space Walks advertising them for hire to children's birthday parties, school fetes and company picnic days, although their appearance was somewhat different to the Bouncy Castles you see today.

I can’t remember seeing my first Bouncy Castle here in the UK, but although they were about I never had the privilege of jumping on one as a child. However, my children certainly enjoyed bouncing up and down on them at parties from an early age which gave me the idea to start hiring them out myself in 1999. Since then the Bouncy Castle industry has certainly been booming with them getting bigger, better and safer.

Since we started we have seen many changes in the industry and make sure we are up to date with latest HSE legislation and keeping an eye in industry trends, which is why I feel I am know a “self appointed” Bouncologist – an expert in Bouncy Castles!
